Count Your Lucky Stars is a label that could easily be pigeonholed into the “emo revival” subset, pushing out releases that are either crushed by their own emotional weight (remember, they’re the ones that originally released Foxing’s runaway smash The Albatross) or uplifted by a sunny buoyancy (the back-and-forth weightlessness of Football, etc. comes to mind).
Oakland, California’s Long Knives is the Michigan imprint’s latest signing, with their debut EP This is Your Life abusing the accelerator as they careen away from both of these CYLS trademarks. After their initial getaway, one could assume this band crashed at the intersection of co-ed pop-punk and bright, open indie-rock. Cuts like the slow-building “Home” rise out of the wreckage’s smoke, billows of soaring vocals spiraling out of equally heightened guitars. It’s interesting Long Knives chose to cap off their maiden joyride with “Bastante,” a snarling, high-energy track, which literally translates from Spanish to a defeated, English “enough.” On this first 7″, it’s easy to hear a promising future. It’s safe to say this opening blast isn’t enough for this Golden State four-piece. Let’s hope not, anyway.
