The Zombies plan a slew of reissues & new book to celebrate ‘Odessey and Oracle’ 50th

News / Record Store Day 2017 / March 1, 2017

Legendary British act The Zombies are going out this year with the four surviving members of the band to perform their classic 1968 album, Odessey and Oracle, in its entirety. As part of that 50th anniversary celebration of the LP, the band has planned a slew of releases around it. First up is a book, The “Odessey”: The Zombies in Words and Images, which will be published by BMG Books and Reel Art Press this month. It will include handwritten lyrics for all the songs on Odessey And Oracle, as well as other of their songs.

I’ve gotten to take a look at an advance, and it’s gorgeously illustrated throughout with original artwork from the original cover artist, Terry Quirk, as well as Vivienne Boucherat, who created mixed media artwork for each song. The members offer up stories behind all the tracks, and there’s all kinds of gorgeous period photos. The commentary and insight from other musicians on each track might be the best part: Graham Nash’s take on “This Will Be Our Year,” for instance, concludes with a simple, “From one songwriter to another, ‘Well done!’”

On the vinyl front, the Zombies have even more on the way. On April 7, Varese Sarabande will release a vinyl Greatest Hits compilation, and you can see the tracklisting for that below. As you can see, it’s all killer, no filler. There’s also a vinyl release of the band’s 2015 album, Still Got That Hunger, in baby blue, via The End/BMG.

Then, for Record Store Day, Varese is doing a limited edition 7-inch “A Rose for Emily” b/w “This Will Be Our Year” on rose-colored vinyl, and The End Records is releasing a 7-inch featuring the Zombies’ 2015 version of “I Want You Back Again” with the original 1965 recording on the flip.

Nick Spacek was once a punk, but realized you can’t be hardcore and use the word “adorable” as often as he does. Nick is a self-described “rock star journalist,” which is strange, considering he’s married with four cats and usually goes to bed by 9. This is just further proof that you can’t trust anyone online.
