Tor Johnson Records, since its beginnings in 2002, has pushed its catalog-wide obsession with atmospheric darkness to the forefront. Even when quieter or more baroque fare like that from Tyler Daniel Bean filed through its ranks, the label showcased its commitment to uncovering the hidden dynamics present in heavier styles. It’s no surprise, then, that a self-evaluation of the label’s history is titled Closer to the Grave, brimming with as much playful macabre as exclusive content. Featuring the final slow burn from Furnace, Tyler Daniel Bean’s trademark distant glimmer, and a handful of other unreleased tracks, the compilation serves as many do: a lens into the past with one cautious, hopeful eye turned towards what lies ahead.
Closer to the Grave will be released tomorrow via Tor Johnson and is available for pre-order on vinyl here.
